Chapter 398: A Letter from the North
Chapter 398: A Letter from the North
Raven and Coën's pupils dilated in shock. Although they had seen mountains of dead insectoids on the way and understood Lynn's power, witnessing him personally execute the Queen still felt like an immense wave crashing over them.
They had never heard of a witcher whose physical capabilities were strong enough to clash directly with a monster like the Endrega Queen. Not even the legendary first-generation witchers from the era of the Witcher Orders could…
Without a second thought, they dropped to one knee, disregarding the filth on the ground.
"Raven of the School of the Manticore (and Coën of the School of the Viper) swear fealty to you."
Lynn, Raven, and Coën walked out of the forest. The two witchers now consistently kept one pace behind Lynn.
Aiden, Gaëtan, and Iwo, who had remained outside, were equally surprised to see Lynn emerge without a scratch, aside from blood splatters. Even for a witcher, suffering injuries while hunting was commonplace. Furthermore, the sounds they'd heard from the forest were clearly not from a minor skirmish. That Lynn was completely unscathed amazed them.
Even Iwo had to admit he had underestimated Lynn.
Lynn looked at them but said little, simply telling them to go inside and inspect the results of the battle.
Half an hour later, when they emerged, their faces mirrored the shock of Raven and Coën.
Even Iwo's prior cold demeanor was completely gone. As a Bear School witcher, his emotions might be stunted, but basic instinct remained. A wealthy and powerful employer was worthy of his loyalty.
With that, the newly recruited witchers voiced no further dissent toward Lynn.
Lynn tasked Master Theinssel, who was still in Novigrad, with forging their respective Grandmaster-level gear. He personally spent time brewing large quantities of Higher-grade Potions and Higher Alchemy Bombs to distribute among them.
Though these newly recruited witcher brothers and sisters hadn't undergone a second mutation and were still at the level of ordinary witchers, it didn't matter. Traditional witchers usually operated alone. Now, Lynn was having these five witchers form a party. As long as they didn't try to solo an entire insect colony like Lynn had, they faced little risk with Higher-grade potions and bombs at their disposal.
A month later, George also returned to Novigrad. Lynn had previously instructed him to travel to the School of the Griffin's stronghold, Kaer Seren, and bring back the remaining Griffin witchers.
George succeeded. He brought back Keldar and Coen (the Griffin witcher). Keldar was an elder from the same generation as Vesemir; he had been teaching at Kaer Seren during the School's golden age. Later, when Kaer Seren was buried by an avalanche created by sorcerers, even Erland, the founder of the Griffin School, sadly departed, his whereabouts unknown. Keldar, however, remained in the castle ruins, training a new generation of witchers like George and Coen.
Lynn met the three Griffin School witchers in Novigrad. George, of course, was already loyal. Keldar and Coen, after speaking with Lynn, formed a positive impression and expressed willingness to contribute to Lynn's new Witcher School.
Lynn had a different arrangement for these three. They wouldn't be sent to Velen to clear out monsters. Instead, they were needed to escort Theinssel and the blacksmith apprentices who had passed the Axii Sign test back to Kaer Morhen. The mithril ore mined deep within the Blue Mountains needed to be forged into weapons by Theinssel and his apprentices.
While Lynn traveled between Novigrad and Velen, Shappelle, following Lynn's instructions, reached out to orphanages in the major cities of Redania and Temeria. They provided the local orphanages with supplies and funds under one single condition: a priest must be added to the orphanage staff to act as the children's new teacher.
This priest's job was to truthfully inform the orphans who was responsible for keeping them warm and fed, and to ensure they grew up as loyal supporters of the witchers. These orphans were to become the foundation of Lynn's larger enterprise. Lynn did not require them all to become witchers; they were free to pursue other professions. But these educated children would possess the highest level of loyalty.
Good news kept coming. The Rustwater Conglomerate's operation within Kaedwen was also proceeding smoothly. Given the prevalent ignorance of the Kaedweni people, they instinctively assumed the Conglomerate was engaging in the slave trade. They already disliked nonhumans. Since someone was willing to remove nonhumans from their country, the Kaedweni were more than happy to permit it and certainly wouldn't interfere.
These nonhumans were temporarily being settled in an outpost called Roruca in southern Eisengard. Once their numbers grew, the Conglomerate would transfer them en masse to Novigrad.
Lynn arranged for all nonhumans arriving in Novigrad to be settled. Those willing to farm could go to Velen and clear land; after five consecutive years of cultivation, they would become owners of the land. Although Velen was officially Triss's domain, what difference was the wife's domain from one's own? They were one family.
For those unwilling to farm and wishing to remain in Novigrad, Lynn had Shappelle arrange employment in the city. Moreover, suitable candidates were selected to join the Syndicate and the Flagless Brotherhood. Novigrad was no longer the terrorist hotbed of The Witcher 3, but truly evolving into an inclusive city.
Velen, too, was slowly improving due to the witchers' efforts and the sharp decrease in the monster population. The arrival of nonhumans inevitably caused some apprehension among the local villagers, but thanks to the ideological work done by the Eternal Fire Priests stationed in every village, the people of Velen gradually accepted the nonhumans.
Alas, such peaceful times are always fleeting.
As winter approached two years later, and the fire in the fireplace at Crow's Perch blazed brightly, a traveling merchant arrived at the castle and personally delivered a letter to Lynn. The merchant wore the insignia of the Rustwater Conglomerate pinned to his chest, and the letter was sealed with the Tisson family crest.
Lynn opened the letter and quickly scanned its contents. The message was brief, just a few simple lines: The matter they had agreed upon long ago was now being set in motion by Istrad. If Lynn was willing to honor their agreement and provide assistance, Istrad's original promises still held true.
The Tisson family's plot to reclaim their kingdom had finally arrived.
Lynn tossed the letter into the roaring fireplace, watching the parchment ignite. "Please tell Lord Istrad that I, Lynn, will absolutely lend a hand."
