Chapter 181 Beijing Base
Chapter 181 Beijing Base
“If it weren’t for us, you would all be dead in the research institute. Does it matter whether this is a temporary camp of the North China Base or not?” Zhao Qi asked the five people in front of him. “Living is the most important thing.”
“You’re right.” Hearing Zhao Qi’s words, Lu Yuan pulled Yang Xiao and Zhong Qiang to the front desk and asked the young man at the front desk, who was about their age, how to register.
"Look, your team members are very pragmatic." Zhao Qi looked at Lu Yuan and the others cooperating, then looked at Ji Lang and Lin Yun, smiled at them, and gestured for them not to resist either.
"Team Leader Ji, Team Leader Lin, we're on someone else's turf now, so let's not keep Brother Zhao from resting." Yang Xiao quickly adapted to the local customs, even changing his address for Zhao Qi to "Brother Zhao," just like Xiao Wei at the front desk.
"I give up." Ji Lang and Lin Yun didn't actually intend to resist. After all, they knew the situation perfectly well. Resisting was no different from wanting to die. They just wanted to ask a few more questions and try to get some information out of them. Who knew that these three students would cooperate like this, especially since Lu Yuan, who used to be the most obedient and least likely to stand out, was leading the way.
"This is my first time in Beijing. Is there anything I should be careful about?" Zhong Qiang asked as he filled out the registration form given to him by Xiao Wei, along with Lu Yuan and the others.
"It's the apocalypse, and you're still asking these questions?" Yang Xiao retorted to Zhong Qiang as he filled out the form.
"Then what should we ask?" Zhong Qiang turned to ask Yang Xiao.
"Do we have our own rooms? The kind without surveillance cameras?" Lu Yuan asked earnestly as he finished filling out the registration form.
“Of course we do. Our Beijing base never uses surveillance systems.” Zhao Qi’s voice came from behind. He looked up at Lu Yuan’s registration form, where two items were listed under “Special Abilities”: one was “Spatial Abilities” and the other was “Teleportation.” After “Teleportation,” there was a note in parentheses that said “Newly Activated, Used Only Once.”
"Oh, so you know how to ask questions." Yang Xiao glanced at Lu Yuan, nodded seriously, and handed the registration form he had filled out to Xiao Wei.
Then, following Xiao Wei's instructions, they went to the two examination rooms on either side, and the empty spaces were left for Lin Yun and Ji Lang to fill out their registration forms.
“These three kids don’t look like they’re with you at all.” After Zhao Qi watched Lu Yuan and Yang Xiao go to the examination room, Zhong Qiang quickly handed in his registration form and went to wait outside the examination room where Lu Yuan had entered. He didn’t seem to want to stay and wait for Ji Lang and Lin Yun at all.
“They are all survivors who were rescued, so they are definitely different from us.” Ji Lang answered casually, and then wrote “ice and snow type ability” in the ability registration column of his registration form, followed by “level 7” in parentheses.
"The level is quite high." Zhao Qi then looked at Lin Yun's registration form. "Wind element level 7, that's also quite high."
“You’re taller than all of us, so there’s no need to say things like that to provoke us.” After saying that, Lin Yun capped his pen and handed it, along with the registration form, to Xiao Wei behind the counter.
“That’s true. In our base, level seven is nothing special.” After Zhao Qi finished speaking, the door behind him opened again, and the other team members who had just said they were going to park the car came out. They greeted Zhao Qi and then went in through the door that Xiao Wei had come out through.
"No need to look anymore. You can go in after the physical examination." Xiao Wei said lazily, seeing that Ji Lang and Lin Yun were looking at the door behind him that was closing again.
Not long after, Lu Yuan and Yang Xiao came out of the examination room. Xiao Wei's computer immediately received the examination feedback. Then he circled both forms and placed them on a scanning device connected to the computer. Immediately afterwards, a box similar to a printer connected to the other side started running and soon produced a wristband made of a special material.
"This is yours, Lu Yuan." Xiao Wei handed the wristband to Lu Yuan. "This is your temporary registration slip at the base. Don't lose it, or you'll have to come back to get a replacement. You'll need it for eating, drinking, and collecting supplies."
Lu Yuan took the wristband from Xiao Wei, and Zhao Qi stepped forward to help him stick it on his wrist. The quality was quite special; it stuck to the skin but didn't feel special, as if it didn't exist.
“The Beijing base is great, you’ll see once you’re inside.” Zhao Qi patted Lu Yuan’s wrist. “Seven days from now, you can become a full member of the base and have the chip implanted.”
Functional chip implantation was already quite common before the virus outbreak, and it greatly facilitated human production and life, so Lu Yuan didn't find it particularly special. He was just amazed that chips, which were in such a chaotic state in other cities and not even used in the four major bases, were now common in the Beijing base, a base that was not under government control.
"Holy crap, this inspection system is really advanced!" Zhong Qiang, who came out of the inspection room, had grown up in G City since he was a child. Although his ancestors had Northeastern blood, he had never been exposed to such high-tech things, even when he traveled to places like S City.
"Yang Xiao, here you go." Zhong Qiang exclaimed over there, and Yang Xiao's temporary wristband also appeared. He didn't ask Zhao Qi for help; he just flicked it and fastened the wristband to his wrist. The wristband then stuck to his skin on its own.
"Haven't you seen enough yet? It's your turn." Zhao Qi patted Ji Lang and Lin Yun on the shoulder. They didn't go to the examination room as soon as Zhong Qiang and Yang Xiao came out, but stayed outside watching.
"It's getting late, there's a welcome party later, let's hurry up." Xiao Wei handed Zhong Qiang the wristband, then looked up at Ji Lang and Lin Yun, and whispered, "We're in a rush, brothers."
"Let's go." Ji Lang and Lin Yun exchanged a glance and each walked into an examination room.
"Welcome party? Welcome to whom? Us?" After putting on the wristband, Zhong Qiang asked again. He looked around. If it was a welcome party, then the five of them should be the only newcomers to this base.
"That's not important. What's important is that there's an event tonight." Unexpectedly, Xiao Wei didn't actually know who the welcome party was for. For him, the important thing was that there were events at the base.
"Hahaha, you little rascal, no wonder you're sneaking instant noodles right now!" Zhao Qi immediately understood what Xiao Wei meant and burst into laughter at the sight of him quickly eating before Ji Lang and the others' test results came out.
"Brother Zhao, can I compare to you guys?" Xiao Wei said while eating large mouthfuls of noodles. "I'm not in good health, and I can't earn many points a day working at the front desk, so I have to eat cheap food like this."
"Haha, I'm in a good mood today, I'll take you with me tonight!" Zhao Qi said, and then saw Ji Lang and Lin Yun walk out of the examination room. Soon, the computer data on Xiao Wei's side came out.
Lin Yun looked at Zhao Qi, who was grinning, and Xiao Wei, who was smiling shyly. He had been inside checking things and couldn't hear what was being said outside, so he could only look at Lu Yuan and the others with a puzzled expression.
"Don't look at us, we don't know either." Yang Xiao shook his head.
“Go inside, and you’ll know everything.” Ji Lang said as he put his coat back on, and soon the temporary wristbands for him and Lin Yun were ready.
The five of them finally followed Zhao Qi and pushed open the door behind Xiao Wei...
