Chapter 237: 3 Things You'll Never Read
Chapter 237: 3 Things You'll Never Read
10:33 AM.
Outside the medium-sized VIP room on the fifth floor of a hotel in Lujiazui.
The reporter, wearing a sun hat and carrying a long lens on his shoulder, stretched over a sofa near the elevator entrance. He had arrived from Minhang at 5:13 this morning, and just over twenty minutes earlier, he had taken a picture of Su Chen and his group of five walking out of the VIP room from behind.
Su Chen's back wasn't straight. His waist was tilted slightly to the right, and his right hand vaguely outlined the black-covered notebook in his pocket.
The reporter took that picture. That photo was uploaded to CBN's backend twelve minutes later.
It was 10:42 a.m. He was still in the same spot.
He is waiting.
People in his industry all know this. In a negotiation, once one party is eliminated, the next key party becomes the focus.
Whether the other person can produce a single statement will determine whether that item can be sold in the next year or the year after.
He waited for more than an hour.
12:05 AM.
Harvey Lindbergh emerged from inside, accompanied by six legal counsel and three technical advisors. He was smiling.
The reporter went to greet them.
"Mr. Lindbergh," he said in Chinese.
Harvey paused for a moment.
He turned around.
"You Chinese journalists," he said in Chinese, "have really something special about your noses."
The reporter nodded. He glanced at the camera lens in his hand. On Harvey's face in the lens, the crow's feet in the middle twitched slightly.
"Mr. Lindbergh," he said, "is today's negotiation about a two-track solution for the list of 172 MEMS algorithm patents?"
Harvey looked at him.
He thought the reporter would back down after he looked at him. The reporter didn't. Instead, he took a step closer with his camera.
Harvey's crow's feet wrinkle near the center of his face twitched.
"You journalists," he said, "have really exceptional ears."
He paused for a moment.
He could have simply ignored them. He could have waved, and his six legal counsel and three advisors would have followed him into the elevator, leaving nothing behind. Before he took off from San Francisco at 3:31 this morning, he had a "statement of action upon arrival in Shanghai" handed to him by his personal assistant. That statement read: No response to reporters.
But he has returned now.
He returned because he had no choice but to. On the negotiating table behind him, he couldn't take away what he thought he could. He couldn't take that piece; now, the table behind him demanded an explanation. This explanation, which he had prepared to "take away" before his 3:31 AM takeoff, was no longer the explanation he envisioned. Now, it was something he "couldn't take away."
Unable to take anything away from him, he needed a move. And now, he's using that move, right under the reporter's lens.
"That Lin Xuan guy," he said—he still preferred "that Lin Xuan guy" to "that Su Chen guy." He was one of the older generation from Berkeley who had been swept up in the ranks.
He paused for a moment.
He started a new sentence.
“That Su Chen guy,” he said, “he’s been too arrogant on this trip. He thought his victories in June would get him to the front lines at NewThink. It’s time for him to show us what it means to be too far ahead.”
He paused.
He raised one hand.
"I swear on my life," he said, "starting at 10:33 a.m. today."
He said, "It will never read any Sentaurus node library."
"I will never read this from any other company that holds a Sentaurus-compatible license."
"It will never be read through any intermediary."
He lowered his hand.
"I will never read Harvey Lindbergh's three works!"
At 12:08 AM, the report was pushed to the original position of CBN's push notification three minutes later. At 12:09 AM, the push notification had been forwarded over 100,000 times. At 12:30 PM, a new topic was embedded in Weibo's trending topics.
"Harvey will never read the three."
At 1:36 PM, the trending topic rose from eighth to second place.
The first one is the "FabFour-EDA chain." That's the necklace that's been hanging there since last night.
At 3 PM, Harvey and his group of ten, along with the person who had come to pick them up from Synaptics' Shanghai branch, boarded their business trip car and returned to Pudong Airport. Harvey had left the document "List of 172 MEMS Algorithm Patents - Two-Track Solution" in one of the pockets of his dark blue suit; he took that document back with him.
After boarding the business trip vehicle, he raised his hand and looked at his watch.
3:08 PM.
He is not resentful now.
He thought he had won because he believed that the three people he had mentioned that morning would never read the news, and that the Qiming project would be unable to proceed. If the Sentaurus node library couldn't be accessed, the Qiming system wouldn't work. And if the Qiming system couldn't work, he would have to hand over the lucrative opportunity behind Su Chen.
This was the trick he used after failing to get the meat this morning.
Harvey thought that with this move, plus the one against He Zhaoming yesterday noon, the Qiming project's victory before June 6th this year would be suppressed.
He thought.
-
That night.
The image of Harvey's three fingers and the face behind them was featured on the front page of CBN (China Business Network) and appeared on the websites of Caijing, 21st Century Business Herald, The Paper, Reuters, and CNBC. The post went from second to first place on the trending topics list at 8 PM tonight.
The original number one, "FabFour-EDA Chains," has been pushed to the next position. Yesterday at noon, He Zhaoming presented five items, and this morning, Harvey had a completely different expression, both simultaneously ranking in the top three of the trending searches.
But the breath mentioned in the trending topics wasn't the breath Harvey thought it was.
When Harvey finished pointing with his three fingers this morning, the reaction on Chinese screens wasn't "Qiming can't move anymore." The reaction was, "Who is Harvey, and what makes him so special?"
One comment on the trending topics received 80,000 likes:
"Did you think that the three you took out this morning that you would never read would stop Qiming's side from moving forward? Wei Lan and her group just met with Qi Fengyuan at ten o'clock this morning."
The next sentence in that comment received 50,000 likes:
"Yesterday at noon, on the show featuring He Zhaoming, Professor He said, 'Did Qiming take the wrong path from the beginning?' Qifeng Institute doesn't produce products, it only produces papers."
The next sentence in that comment received 30,000 likes:
"Harvey's three fingers this morning couldn't move Qifeng Academy."
It's 8 PM.
In a certain penguin group.
Old Chen's pen: "Harvey's three fingers this morning, I thought they could put Qiming down. I thought they could."
"You pointed at the wrong thing. Harvey's three fingers didn't point to Qiming. Whether he reads the Sentaurus or not is their Qiming side's business. It was something that was illuminated this morning. Something was revealed, and Harvey, all those words you said from San Francisco were about taking a piece of the flesh behind that thing. If you can't take that piece of flesh, after those three fingers you pointed this morning, the conference table behind you will be one seat short two years from now."
Hand-stirred Hellfire.
The old man inside remained silent: "Thumbs up."
Xie Family Youth: "Thumbs up."
Old Na didn't say anything: "Great. Whether or not Qiming can be involved is one thing. Qifeng Institute's future is another. The 30 billion yuan deal with Weilan on June 6th this year didn't go through Qiming's side. Weilan's deal on June 6th this year went through Qifeng Institute."
Seemingly True but Actually 9527: "Have you noticed," he said, "that after you two went up to the top at 3:36 this afternoon, the trending topics didn't include 'Sentaurus can't be read, Qiming can't move.' Instead, the trending topics were 'Which one moved, Qiming or Qifeng?'"
Chen Laobi: "Whether Harvey Qiming can read Sentaurus or not is not about whether Qiming can move around. It's about whether Harvey can grasp the set of things behind Qiming."
I'm speechless. Whether Qiming can move around or not isn't about whether Harvey can produce it this morning. Whether he can move around or not is about whether Qifeng Academy can produce it by 10 a.m. Qiming isn't Qifeng Academy. Harvey couldn't produce a set of things behind Qifeng Academy this morning, so Qiming is the one moving around. Qiming's movement refers to the set behind Qifeng Academy.
"Lin Wei," said seemingly-but-not-quite-9527, "Su Chen."
He paused for a moment.
"The two of them tried it out," he said.
After that seemingly ambiguous person, 9527, finished saying that sentence, all six people in the group simultaneously gave it a thumbs up.
After that sentence, there was a moment of silence in the group.
A moment later, Old Chen said, "What their names are doesn't matter. What matters is that they are them."
Old Na didn't say, "they."
