Chapter 69 Disruptive Innovation
Chapter 69 Disruptive Innovation
In the courtyard, sunlight filtered through the palm trees, creating a bright band of light between Ling Yun and Clark. Clark was still reeling from the groundbreaking strategy of "offensive operation system" proposed by Ling Yun.
“Mr. Ling,” Clark took a deep breath, trying to understand this crazy idea, “I admit, directly challenging the operating system is… very bold. But even if Netscape is determined to invest, it will be a long and brutal war. You mean, Netscape could invest in or cooperate with your ‘Star System’ that you are developing?”
He naturally assumed that the so-called cooperation was nothing more than pre-binding and deeply integrating Netscape's browser into Lingyun's operating system, much like Microsoft binds Internet Explorer, as a means of countering Microsoft. While this was easier than developing from scratch, it was essentially still imitating Microsoft's approach.
Ling Yun looked at Clark with a mysterious smile on his face, and gently shook his head.
"Mr. Clark, you've misunderstood. The collaboration I'm talking about is far more than just 'built-in integration.'" His voice was calm, yet carried a disruptive force. "That's still outdated thinking, just going around in circles within the circles drawn by Microsoft."
He leaned forward slightly, his gaze fixed intently on Clark, and slowly and deliberately uttered his long-conceived core idea, one that truly possessed the power to deliver a devastating blow:
"My 'Star System' can do without a traditional 'desktop'."
"What?" Clark was taken aback, not quite understanding what "no desktop" meant. Graphical user interface (GUI) and desktop, hadn't they become standard features of personal computers since the success of Macintosh and Windows?
Ling Yun didn't keep everyone in suspense and continued to clearly explain his disruptive design:
"My idea is that after the user powers on the computer, the system will start directly and enter a highly customized and powerful Netscape browser interface in full screen."
He gestured with his hand on a virtual screen on the table: "This browser interface is the 'whole world' that the user sees. It's not just a window for browsing web pages; it is the 'shell' of the operating system, the only front end for the user to interact with the computer!"
Clark's eyes widened slowly, and his breathing became rapid. He seemed to have caught something, but he wasn't sure.
Lingyun continued to paint this picture of the future:
"Within this special 'browser shell,' we can not only place shortcuts to web pages, such as directly opening Yahoo News or Amazon Shopping, but more importantly, we can also place icons for local applications on this browser interface!"
"Users only need to click an icon, and whether it's local WPS word processing software, Photoshop, or a news website on the internet, the system will seamlessly call the corresponding local executable file in the background or directly load the corresponding webpage. Throughout the entire process, users do not need to see a Windows desktop, find 'My Computer,' double-click the 'Internet Explorer' icon, or type a long URL in the address bar."
"Imagine this," Ling Yun's voice was incredibly persuasive, "turn on your computer, and instantly you're in the familiar Netscape interface. On the left are icons for your frequently used local software (calculator, Paint, document editor), and on the right are links to your saved websites and real-time news summaries. Want to write a document? Click the WPS icon, and the local application launches instantly. Want to shop online? Click the Amazon icon, and the webpage appears immediately. Local and online—in this interface, the boundaries are blurred, the experience is unified, and the operation is simplified to the extreme."
"This..." Clark's mouth dropped open, as if a thunderbolt had exploded in his mind! He finally understood what Ling Yun meant!
This is not a simple partnership! It's building the entire user interaction layer of the operating system entirely on top of Netscape Navigator! Netscape Navigator is no longer just an application within the system; it has been elevated to the system platform itself!
What does this mean?
This means that Microsoft Windows' most prized and user-familiar "desktop" concept has been completely abandoned and replaced!
This means that the value of IE browser as a "system entry point" on which it survives has completely disappeared in this new system!
This means that Netscape, leveraging its brand and technological advantages in the browser field, has directly defined a completely new computing experience paradigm centered on the web and offering greater ease of use! This is practically creating a brand new "online empire" with the "web portal" as its capital!
Seeing the complex expression on Clark's face—a mixture of extreme shock, ecstasy, and disbelief—Ling Yun knew that his idea had struck at the heart of the enemy's strategic nerves.
"Mr. Clark," Ling Yun concluded slowly, "in this way, we not only bypassed Microsoft's walls, but we even redefined the form of 'home.' When users can access the network and the world the moment they turn on their computers, when 'surfing the internet' becomes as natural and simple as breathing, who will care about the traditional desktop that requires layers of clicks to reach the destination? Netscape will no longer be just software running on an operating system; it will become the gateway, platform, and definer of the next generation of computing experiences!"
"This...this is insane! But...but..." Clark was so excited he was almost incoherent. He jumped to his feet and paced back and forth beside his seat. "This idea...God, this idea could change everything!"
He could almost see the immense appeal such a system would have for users craving a simpler, more direct internet experience! It would be a real, heavyweight bomb dropped on the fortress of Microsoft's Windows empire!
A storm capable of upending the entire industry has been officially ignited by Ling Yun's few words. Clark's gaze towards Ling Yun was filled with unprecedented respect, even a hint of awe. This young man not only saw the crisis, but also held a true trump card capable of reshuffling the game.
