Chapter 53 Success
Chapter 53 Success
The sweet potatoes here look different from those on Earth; they appear to be more than twice the size.
The one he dug out was about the thickness of five fingers and the length of a forearm, which is why he found it strange at first.
However, now that the encyclopedia had told him he could eat it, Lin Baiyan stopped worrying and happily thought, "Bigger is better, bigger means more food!"
"Yang Ye, come quick!" The young man turned around to call Yang Ye and the others, but found that there was no one behind him. It turned out that he had unknowingly wandered away from the group and turned to the hillside on the east side.
No wonder I didn't find sweet potatoes before. Sweet potatoes are drought-resistant and love sunshine. The eastern slopes get more sunlight, while potatoes prefer shade and are afraid of drought, so they grow more on the southern slopes.
Lin Baiyan hurried back to where the gathering team was gathered and saw Yang Ye bending over digging potatoes. He went over to pull him, "Yang Ye, come quick! I found another kind of edible plant fruit, and it's huge!"
Yang Ye was a little bewildered when the young man suddenly pulled him up. Upon hearing Lin Baiyan's words, he ran even faster than Lin Baiyan, grabbed him by the back, and led him away, even calling to the other sub-beastmen around them to join him, showing none of his previous shyness.
A group of people arrived at the spot where Lin Baiyan had just been. Lin Baiyan pulled out a fresh sweet potato and handed it to the surrounding sub-beastmen to show them, saying, "This is a sweet potato. It's sweet and can be kept for a very long time."
As he spoke, he broke open a sweet potato chunk, stuffed the core into Yang Ye's mouth, and chewed it subconsciously. The orc's delicate face immediately widened, and he mumbled, "This is really sweet, so delicious."
Several orcs took a bite, their eyes lighting up. "Let's make more of this!"
In the world of orcs, sweetness is exceptionally precious and rare. Most of the orcs here lead a primitive and simple life, relying primarily on the bounty of nature for their food.
The sweetness mostly comes from the roots, fruits, and berries found in the forest.
This sweetness is not something you can enjoy anytime, anywhere; it can only be found in specific seasons or locations. Moreover, most of the fruit is sour, making the sweet fruit even more precious.
Yang Ye said to Shu Yue, who was chewing sweet potatoes with her cheeks puffed out behind her, "Go and call Captain Tu Lin. Let's dig up more sweet potatoes today so that the tribe members can have a taste too."
Rat Moon nodded and quickly ran away.
When Tu Lin returned with another group of sub-beastmen, Lin Baiyan and Yang Ye had already dug up a large and small pile of sweet potatoes, which were piled together like small mountains, looking quite spectacular.
When Tu Lin saw the sweet potato, he squatted down and examined it carefully. "I think I saw this thing at the tribal market. The orcs who sold these things called it sweet potato."
He stood up and said with a smile, "You guys are in luck today. These sweet potatoes are quite expensive because they're a bit sweet!"
Everyone was pleasantly surprised, and the group worked with great enthusiasm, harvesting several batches of sweet potatoes.
By evening, Lin Baiyan estimated that the charcoal in the earthen kiln had almost completely burned out.
He touched the outer wall of the earthen kiln; the temperature had dropped. So he picked up a relatively thick branch and dug the earth along the archway he had drawn the day before.
After the soil inside the archway was cleared away, the black charcoal on the outermost edge could be seen. At this moment, Lang Cang, who had just returned from hunting, approached the young man.
"Is it ready now?"
"Yes, the temperature has dropped, so there shouldn't be any problem." Lin Baiyan said as he used a twig to slowly remove the charcoal from the earthen kiln.
The earthen kiln was still warm, and the charcoal was hot to the touch.
They piled the charcoal together after all the charcoal had been removed.
Lin Baiyan picked up a relatively thick piece of charcoal, cracked it open, and saw that the core inside was also black.
The young man's face was beaming with joy; he had succeeded!
"He seems to have quite a talent," Lin Baiyan thought to himself happily.
Of that small pile of charcoal, only the outermost ring of wood wasn't completely burned when I first started digging; the rest was successfully burned.
"These are the fully burned charcoal pieces; some of them haven't been burned yet," Lin Baiyan pointed to two different types of charcoal for Lang Cang to see.
Lang Cang pulled over a wicker basket, and the two of them filled the basket with charcoal.
The charcoal inside contained various sizes, and even charcoal ash. The young man didn't waste any of it; he swept it all up and put it away separately.
The earthen kiln was very compact and looked like it could be used several times. He then stacked the new firewood layer by layer in the shape of a well, and then made another kiln of charcoal in the same way.
Even though it was already late autumn, he was so busy that his face was covered in sweat.
The young man patted his hands, which had turned black, and wiped his face without realizing it. He was all smiles. "Let's try it tonight."
Lang Cang looked at him and saw that he had covered his face in grime, so he subconsciously leaned over and wiped away the smear of grime from the side of his cheek.
Lang Cang suddenly approached, catching Lin Baiyan off guard. He saw a handsome face right in front of him.
The person in front of him still had no expression, but his eyes didn't seem so cold anymore. The young man wondered if he was mistaken, but he felt that Lang Cang's current appearance was faintly gentle.
The young man felt his blood rushing from his feet to his brain, causing his heart to beat faster.
He subconsciously took a step back, feeling somewhat uneasy.
Wolf Cang's eyes darkened as he looked at the young man. He pointed to the young man's cheek and explained, "You have some dust on your face..."
Lin Baiyan smiled awkwardly, her ears turning slightly red, realizing she had overreacted.
He coughed and reached up to wipe his face, only to see his dark, blackened palms.
Lin Baiyan casually tossed out a sentence.
"Put the charcoal inside the cave first, I'm going to wash my hands."
Then he ran away quickly, as if some wild beast was chasing him.
Lang Cang watched the young man's somewhat hurried departure and couldn't help but smile.
His appearance made Xiong Fei and Hu Qiu, who were passing by, feel uneasy. What was wrong with their chief? Had he gone mad? The two male orcs secretly glanced at him several times.
Lang Cang had already caught a glimpse of them out of the corner of his eye; with Xiong Fei's size, it would be hard not to see him.
His expression instantly turned serious, and he glanced at them sideways. "What, have you finished today's training?"
Upon hearing this, Xiong Fei and Hu Qiu immediately burst into tears. Ever since the clan chief returned from the salt-hunting team, he had found a bunch of strange training methods for them to practice, including but not limited to jumping over cliffs, rock climbing, swimming in rivers, and hiding their bodies, and so on.
Each and every one of these things looked so dangerous that they would have to meet the Beast God.
Not to mention basic speed and attack practice.
