Chapter 96 Tidal Storm
Chapter 96 Tidal Storm
"Zhizhi, what's wrong? Did you have a nightmare?" Lei Xiu, who was sitting and pretending to doze off, noticed Lezhi's movement and immediately got up to check on her.
Lei Xiu reached out to wipe away the beads of sweat that had appeared on Le Zhi's forehead without him noticing, a look of worry flashing in his eyes.
Taking a couple of light breaths, Lezhi felt enveloped by Lei Xiu's body warmth, and her wandering consciousness slowly returned to its place. She shook her head gently, unsure what to say.
"I'm... I'm fine..."
They made little noise, and it was already quite late at night, so no one in the tribe noticed them.
Biting her lip, Lezhi recalled the storm that had almost materialized in her dream and wondered if she was dreaming about the tidal storm that Leyou had mentioned during the day.
Noticing that Lezhi's expression was off, Lei Xiu raised his hand and gently rubbed Lezhi's forehead. "You don't look like you're alright. You can tell me what's wrong. Don't overthink things."
Having spent so much time together, Lei Xiu had long since realized that Le Zhi was someone who liked to internalize his feelings, a habit that, frankly, stemmed from a lack of trust. Therefore, Lei Xiu had been working to build trust with Le Zhi in various ways, hoping that one day Le Zhi would try to rely on him.
As her heartbeat gradually calmed, Lezhi looked up at Lei Xiu in front of her and saw her own reflection in his eyes. Perhaps Lei Xiu's previous efforts had paid off, because Lezhi didn't hesitate for long before deciding to try sharing her absurd dream with him.
"...That's it. I suspect it might be because of what Leyou said that I had this dream in my subconscious. It's absurd, isn't it!" With a self-deprecating laugh, Lezhi changed her posture and sat cross-legged with her back bent.
Lei Xiu, who had been by his side, adjusted his posture as well, supporting Le Zhi with his arm and helping Le Zhi sit up straight against him. "I don't think so. Your dream seems absurd, but there are clues to it. Maybe the Mother Tree sensed your thoughts and responded to you with a dream!"
Lei Xiu's words provided Le Zhi with a new perspective. He always forgot that Jormungandr was a land of faith, and the existence of the Mother Tree was a bug. So now Le Zhi was starting to waver again.
"So, according to you, what is my dream foreshadowing?" Thinking of a possibility, Lezhi jumped up and sat up. "Hiss, could it be that a tidal storm is coming?"
Raising her hand to soothe the startled Lezhi, whose voice was a bit loud, she noticed the patrolling guards nearby. It was a familiar face; Lezhi remembered his name: Leman. His dark and light green hair had left a deep impression on Lezhi.
"What's wrong?" Le Man asked with concern as she nimbly stepped over the place where the tribesmen were resting.
“It’s nothing,” Lei Xiu replied. “Lezhi just had a dream, and we suspect it might be a warning from the Mother Tree. We’re discussing it now.”
Hearing Lei Xiu so casually voice their still unresolved guesses, Le Zhi stared at him in surprise, unsure how to react.
"Oh, what kind of warning?" Le Man's reaction surprised Le Zhi. He didn't subconsciously question it first, but just asked out of curiosity.
Encouraged by Lei Xiu's gaze, Le Zhi hesitantly began, "Well, it might be about tidal storms, but I'm not sure..."
Seeing Le Man's suddenly serious expression, Le Zhi was also a little unsure whether it was inappropriate for her to say it like that.
"Keep your voices down and follow me. We're going to find the captain." Le Man ignored Le Zhi's uncertainty, gave Lei Xiu a look, and the two of them, one leading the way and the other bringing up the rear, quickly led Le Zhi to Le Shan, who was still awake.
"...What, a tidal storm!" A suppressed exclamation burst from Le Shan's mouth. He did not question Le Zhi's words, but reacted quickly.
"Leman, go and inform all the team members to start preparing immediately. Wake up the other tribesmen who are still asleep and tell them to be on high alert."
Seeing Le Man leave to carry out his orders, Le Zhi hesitated, unable to utter a word of objection. The whole affair had started because of him, and now the tribespeople weren't questioning him; instead, they were fully cooperating—this was not what Le Zhi had expected.
After much deliberation, Lezhi slowly clenched his fist. He decided to give up. Things were already as they were; at worst, it would just be a false alarm, and he'd only bear some blame. It didn't matter. At least for this moment, his people believed in him more than he believed in himself, and that was enough.
Having figured this out, Lezhi stopped worrying. He watched as the once quiet camp quickly became noisy. Lei Xiu led him back to Maoqiu's side. By this time, Leyou and the others had been woken up and were quickly gathered together in order.
All the young members of the clan took out some seeds and, to Lezhi's astonishment, placed them in designated spots. Then, each of them used their own methods to encourage the seeds to germinate and grow.
It must be a vine seed, empowered by the energy of the tree spirits, growing extremely fast. The ground where they stood shook as the roots of the vines quickly dug out a depression large enough for the people to half-squat down.
"Everyone sit down where you are, and don't move unless instructed to do so..." Under Leshan's loud command, all the clansmen found suitable seats and sat down, huddling together.
Once he was sure everyone had acted according to his instructions, Leshan raised his hand and made a gesture. The guards then dispersed around the crowd according to their positions, forming an encirclement.
The tribesmen responsible for stimulating the vines changed shifts. This time, the vine roots no longer dug into the soil, but extended downwards to grip the ground more deeply. The vines on the ground began to grow in a winding and intertwined manner. When Lezhi looked up, he discovered that the vines were not growing freely, but were growing in a crisscrossing pattern according to certain rules.
This scene was familiar to Lezhi; Leju had once used this trick to weave a bunch of rattan combs for him. Now, the tribespeople worked together, weaving a shelter for them on this exposed plain with intertwined vines.
Just as they were halfway through weaving, a howling wind suddenly came from the sky, followed by a guard shouting, "Captain, a tidal storm is coming..."
Even though they had been warned beforehand, the news that the tidal storm was actually coming still caused a stir among the tribesmen. A rustling sound arose, but this slight panic did not affect Leshan's actions.
"Speed up the pace, the others continue to observe."
"Yes."
Under Le Shan's calm command, everyone quickly quieted down. The vines, infused with more energy, grew even faster. The wind had already begun to blow fiercely, rushing into the shelter from the direction from which the vines had not yet closed.
Lezhi was surrounded by the crowd and was among the least affected. Even so, she could feel her hair being blown around, which showed how strong the wind was.
The guards on the edge of the shelter were all tense, their arms linked with those of their people, using their bodies to build a defensive line for them.
The eye of the storm was beginning to emerge in the distance, approaching at a visible speed, and the tribespeople on the outer edges were unable to speak. The tribespeople responsible for activating the vines continued to exert their power under pressure, finally managing to close the vines just before the eye of the storm got close.
With no entrance to the storm, the small shelter instantly became calm, and the only way to tell whether the storm was still raging was by the incessant howling of the wind overhead.
