Chapter 568 A mistake
Chapter 568 A mistake
The summer sun shone like a golden veil on the garrison of the Norwegian Province's Standing Infantry Regiment. In the camp, the soldiers on the training ground shouted loud slogans, marched in neat steps, and their sweat sparkled in the sun.
Regimental Commander Koval was standing by the window of his office, holding a copy of the Helderland Military Newspaper in his hand.
"Tsk tsk, has the fight on Yoda's side become like this?"
Koval couldn't help but sigh in amazement as he read the newspaper. His brows furrowed slightly, and his eyes revealed a hint of surprise and thought.
The degree of chaos within the Yoda Empire has far exceeded his understanding. Either a rebellion has broken out in this area, or a noble war has broken out in that place to fight for territory. All kinds of chaotic situations are like a tangled mess that is almost making him dizzy.
"Fight, it's best if you kill them all."
Koval thought so in his heart. As a veteran who had fought Yoda a few years ago, he was full of disgust and dissatisfaction towards that country.
He hoped that the Yoda Empire would be finished quickly so that he could take advantage of the situation and gain some benefits.
Just as Koval was immersed in his own thoughts, there was a hurried knock on the office door, and the sound of "dong dong dong" broke the silence of the office.
Koval came to his senses, folded the newspaper and placed it on the desk, then said calmly:
"Come in!"
The young soldier standing guard at the door stood at attention and saluted nervously, then reported in a loud voice:
"Report to the commander! There are civilians outside the camp gate who want to see you. They say they have something important to discuss!"
Koval's brows were furrowed. Ever since he was promoted to the commander of the standing infantry regiment three years ago, the people who came to see him were either official messengers from his superiors or his parents who came to visit.
"Have you confirmed your identity?"
"The man was wearing the coarse short robe of an ordinary merchant."
Fine beads of sweat oozed from the young soldier's forehead, and a hint of uneasiness appeared in his eyes.
"He said... he said you must remember him, but he wouldn't tell me his name."
Koval was in great pain. He really couldn't think of who was looking for him.
Suddenly, he thought that maybe something had happened to his parents, and the town sent someone to inform him.
Thinking of this, he immediately stood up. Since non-military personnel were prohibited from entering the military base, he immediately went to the gate of the military camp to meet this person.
When he pushed open the door, the midday sun made him squint slightly, and then he walked towards the camp gate.
As soon as he arrived at the door, Koval saw a suspicious person near the door. If he had not been informed in advance, Koval would have thought that this person was a spy.
In the shadow of the distant camp gate watchtower, stood a man wearing a brown conical hat. Under his loose linen coat, the outline of a bulging purse at his waist was faintly visible.
The man turned around when he heard footsteps, and the curtain hanging from the edge of his hat revealed half of his scarred face.
"You are Captain Koval, right?"
The man walked over quickly and said to Koval when he was a few meters away.
"I am, who are you and what do you want from me?"
He always lowered his voice deliberately when he spoke, as if he was afraid of being heard by the sentry in the distance:
"It doesn't matter who I am. What matters is that I want to discuss business with you."
"Ok?"
Koval was puzzled. He was a soldier, so what business could he discuss with him? He asked cautiously:
"what are you up to?"
"It's nothing, it's just..."
The man rubbed his hands and looked at several soldiers behind him. Koval felt even more strange. What did this man want to say behind others' backs?
"Just say it right here."
Koval said directly.
"This……"
Seeing Koval's decisiveness, the man hesitated for a moment and then came over and whispered in Koval's ear:
"I want to buy some arms from you, preferably artillery or something like that."
"what!"
Koval took two steps back as if struck by lightning, and the heels of his boots hit the steps heavily, making a dull sound.
His face turned ashen in an instant, and a hint of anger and shock flashed in his eyes.
He shouted sharply:
"Who the hell are you? How dare you try to bribe an officer to resell arms?"
The man was startled when he heard Koval shouting, and his body trembled involuntarily.
He said quickly:
"Master Koval! The price I offer is absolutely right. It's exactly the same price you've previously sold it to other smugglers. If you're not satisfied, I can raise it further."
"ah?!!!"
Koval was even more confused. When did he start reselling arms again? This was simply nonsense!
He shouted loudly:
"How dare you! Someone, arrest him!"
Hearing their commander's shout, the soldiers guarding the gate rushed forward. They were well-trained, and their movements were quick and decisive. They rushed towards the suspicious man like a tiger and subdued him to the ground.
The man struggled a few times, but was soon pinned down by the soldiers and unable to move.
The soldiers then immediately began to search him. Their movements were skillful and careful, and they soon found a bulging purse in his pocket.
A soldier opened the purse, and it was full of gold coins. The gold coins sparkled so brightly in the sunlight that it was impossible to open one's eyes.
"Boy, there are quite a few."
A soldier couldn't help but say.
Koval said to the man:
"Where did you get all this money?!"
Seeing his money being taken away, the man pondered for a moment on the ground. Suddenly, his eyes lit up, as if he had thought of something. Then, with an expression of sudden realization and indignation, he said to Koval:
"I understand. You're bullying me, the new guy. You want to rob me, right?"
"What a mess this is."
Koval was so confused that he didn't understand what the man was talking about.
However, the man continued to scold:
"Don't play dumb. I've already inquired with Yoda. You accepted bribes from smugglers to move artillery from the armory and sell it. And among the several arms dealers I inquired about, you sold the most."
"If you don't let me go, I will make this matter public, and then we will die together!"
The man continued to threaten, with a hint of viciousness in his eyes.
Hearing this, Koval couldn't bear it anymore.
What he could not tolerate the most was being forced to accuse him of a crime, especially a serious one.
His face turned livid, his eyes burning with anger. He immediately stepped forward, raised his hand and slapped him:
"I let you talk nonsense!"
The slap was so loud and crisp that a red palm print immediately appeared on the man's face.
……
"That's how it all is."
Wesker stood in front of John and reported seriously:
"Several officers and border inspectors have reported that they were inexplicably charged with arms trafficking and bribery by strangers. These people are now being taken to Helmingen."
He continued:
"This matter is also related to the intelligence department. Many intelligence personnel pretended to be smugglers and sold foreign trade artillery to Yoda and Midland personnel at high prices. In order to explain the source, they said that these artillery were shipped out by bribing military officers and border inspectors. In order to make the source appear authentic, these people also disclosed the real names of the relevant personnel."
John frowned, and after a moment's silence, he slowly said:
"Good boy, you guys have had enough fun."
Wesker lowered his head, waiting for John's instructions.
John raised his head and looked at Wesker. He said:
"Officials who have been falsely accused should be promptly cleared of charges and compensated. Those who attempt bribery should be rigorously interrogated; there may be some big fish among them."
