Chapter 940: Family Interaction
Chapter 940: Family Interaction
This wasn't the first time Principal Jiang and Ji Lan had visited the old villa where the elderly couple, Lao Huang and Zeng Lijuan, lived. Moreover, their in-laws were so hospitable that the couple felt completely at ease.
"Thanks to you both, we were able to attend the opening ceremony. We don't know how to thank you enough," Ji Lan said politely to Zeng Lijuan.
Zeng Lijuan was very pleased with these words, but she said aloud, "No need for thanks. If anyone should be thanking someone, it's me thanking you both for raising such a wonderful daughter."
The two old ladies were praising each other, and the two old men weren't idle either.
Old Huang brought his in-law, Principal Jiang, to his cigar room because it was inconvenient for them to smoke with children around.
"Here, try this." Old Huang took one of the many cigar boxes on the shelf, took out a cigar from it, and handed it to his in-law, Principal Jiang.
Principal Jiang had never smoked this thing before, and he held it in his hand, studying it intently.
Seeing that Principal Jiang didn't know how to smoke a cigar, Old Huang taught him step by step how to smoke one.
"You can't smoke a cigar like you would a cigarette. You have to inhale slowly and be careful not to swallow the smoke. Just keep it in your mouth and feel it with your mouth."
Following his in-laws' instructions, Principal Jiang clumsily took his first puff of a cigar. After a while, he smacked his lips a few times, licked them, and frowned as he pondered for a long time.
"My dear in-law, to be honest, I didn't get anything out of it, and I'm not used to the taste."
Old Huang laughed: "That's normal, that's normal. It's my first time smoking this stuff, and I'm not as good as you! How about this, if you don't like it, I'll get you some cigarettes instead."
"Then I'll have a cigarette!" Principal Jiang couldn't be happier. At home, his wife Ji Lan usually kept his smoking under control, but now that he was at his in-laws' house, she felt embarrassed to stop him. He took the opportunity to indulge himself.
To his surprise, Lao Huang gave him two directly.
He recognized the brand of this cigarette, but he had never seen it on the market before. Principal Jiang looked completely bewildered as he held the cigarette.
He asked Lao Huang, "Is this cigarette brand new?"
These cigarettes were given to Lao Huang by his youngest son. He gave him about ten cartons in total. However, Lao Huang had stopped smoking a long time ago, so they had been kept in the cabinet in the cigar room. If it weren't for his in-law, Principal Jiang, not being used to cigars, Lao Huang would have almost forgotten that there were still more than a dozen cartons of cigarettes in the cabinet.
Whether it's a new release or not, Lao Huang really doesn't know, since he basically doesn't have many opportunities to spend money.
The cigarettes, alcohol, cigars, and other necessities for the family are delivered every month. He doesn't have to worry about food, clothing, housing, or transportation, so the little money Old Huang carries in his pocket never seems to decrease by more than a few bills throughout the year.
So when his in-laws, Principal Jiang, asked him a question, he naturally couldn't answer.
"I'm not sure either. It's probably not a new product; I think I've had these cigarettes for about a year!"
Principal Jiang handed the cigarette back to Old Huang: "You gave me too much. I'll just have two."
Old Huang shoved the cigarettes back at Principal Jiang, looking displeased: "I tell you, you're just so unpleasant. You're trying to pass the cigarettes back and forth with me."
Seeing that Old Huang was about to get angry with him, Principal Jiang thought that the Huang family wasn't short of cigarettes, so he accepted the two cartons of cigarettes.
In the tea room on the first floor, the two Huang brothers chatted and drank tea with Jiang Shan, the elder brother of their sister-in-law.
When it comes to brewing tea, Huang Xiaochuan is naturally the best choice, mainly because he's become quite picky about tea and feels that tea brewed by ordinary people doesn't taste right.
Jiang Shan was a little reserved at first, but after the Huang brothers chatted with him for a while, he gradually relaxed.
"Our unit is usually not very busy, except during the flood season when things get a bit busier."
Jiang Shan works at an irrigation and drainage station under the Water Resources Bureau. The only downside is that it's far from home, making commuting inconvenient. But things are much better now; he recently bought a car.
Huang Erhe was curious about Jiang Shan's work: "What do you usually do at work?"
Jiang Shan chuckled and said, "To be honest, I don't have much to do most of the time. I just regularly maintain and test the generators and motors to prevent them from failing to start during the flood season. Most of the time I watch TV, read books, and read newspapers; otherwise, I wouldn't know how to pass the time."
Huang Erhe continued, "It sounds like a pretty easy job. How's the salary?"
Jiang Shan took a sip of tea, put down his teacup, and said, "The salary is neither high nor low, it's alright, but most of the time there's nothing to do, I'm so bored I feel like I'm going to grow hair on my body."
He then added, "Our irrigation station only has eight people in total, working in three shifts. Each shift only has two people working, so we can't even get enough people to play cards."
The Huang brothers exchanged a glance. Well, this job is really easy. The eldest brother's brother-in-law is quite lucky.
Miguo looked at Jiang Yufei, who was not far away, with curiosity. She had never seen this older sister before. After watching for a while, she tugged at Maowa's clothes.
Miguo looked at Jiang Yufei, who was not far away, with curiosity. She had never seen this older sister before. After watching for a while, she tugged at Maowa's clothes.
Mao Wa was discussing an NBA game with Huang Zemian when they were suddenly interrupted. A little annoyed, he turned around and asked, "What is it now?"
Having lived under the same roof for so long, Miguo already knew Maowa's temperament well. Don't be fooled by his sometimes fierce demeanor; he's just a paper tiger.
So she didn't care about Maowa's attitude at all, and quietly pointed at Jiang Yufei: "Who is that older sister?"
Huang Zemian was right next to her, so he heard what she said. Before Maowa could speak, he said, "She's my uncle's daughter, my cousin." Actually, he wasn't very close to Jiang Yufei. After all, they rarely saw each other and didn't have much of a relationship. He wasn't as close to Miguo as he was to her.
Miguo understood now. She nodded. Because of the large age difference between the two, Miguo had no intention of getting close to Jiang Yufei; she was just a little curious.
Jiang Yufei had no intention of getting close to the kids, partly because the age gap was too big and they couldn't find common ground. Besides, she couldn't connect with the two boys either; they were both middle schoolers, and all they talked about was basketball and such, which she had no interest in at all.
Feeling quite bored, she took out her phone to send text messages to her roommates. The campus card offered a monthly text message plan, which was very cheap, so this was a common way for them to chat.
Just now, while her father was having tea with the Huang brothers, she secretly took a picture with her phone and sent it via MMS to the roommate she was closest to among her three roommates.
Soon, my roommate Shen Yicai (who is not wealthy) replied: "Was the person making tea Huang Xiaochuan?"
She replied quickly: "Yes."
Shen Yicai: "Wow, you're at the richest man's house?"
Jiang Yufei's fingers flew across the keyboard: "No, this is his parents' house. His parents invited our whole family to dinner, and he came too."
Shen Yicai: "Then take a few more pictures! Let me see what the richest man's parents' house looks like, isn't it magnificent and opulent?"
"It's not as exaggerated as you say. It's not appropriate to take pictures in someone else's house. It would be impolite if someone saw them. But I did take a lot of pictures of the garden. I'll post them in the group chat when I go online tonight. Sending them via MMS is too slow."
Shen Yicai: "Okay, I'll sit in front of the computer and wait tonight. I'm so excited!"
